10 Day Ramadan Sunnah Iʿtikāf

A Journey of Worship & Renewal

As Ramadan enters its final ten nights, Allah ﷻ grants us a special opportunity to draw closer to Him through Sunnah Iʿtikāf.

These are the most blessed nights of the year, containing Laylatul Qadr — better than a thousand months. The Prophet ﷺ observed Iʿtikāf every year and increased his worship during these nights.

What is Iʿtikāf?

Iʿtikāf is secluding oneself in the masjid solely for the worship of Allah.

The 10-day Iʿtikāf is a Sunnah Mu’akkadah ‘ala al-Kifayah (a strongly emphasised communal Sunnah). If no one in the community performs it, all share in the sin.

When Does It Begin?

It begins before Maghrib on the 20th of Ramadan and ends at the sighting of the Shawwal moon.

Make the intention before Maghrib:
“I intend Sunnah Iʿtikāf for the last ten days of Ramadan for the sake of Allah.”

Virtues of the Last Ten Nights

  • Seeking Laylatul Qadr

  • Increased Qur’an recitation

  • Du‘ā and dhikr

  • Reviving the Sunnah

  • Repentance and personal reform

The Prophet ﷺ would exert himself in worship and stay awake during these nights.
